Cardiac PET

A cardiac PET (rubidium) scan is an advanced version of a myocardial perfusion test. It gives very detailed, accurate images of how blood is flowing through your heart—often more precise than traditional nuclear stress tests.

What it is

  • PET = a high-resolution imaging technique
  • Rubidium-82 = a tracer that behaves like potassium and is quickly taken up by heart muscle cells

How it works

  • Rubidium-82 is injected into your bloodstream.
  • It travels to your heart and highlights blood flow.
  • A PET scanner captures images:
    • At rest
    • During stress (exercise or medication)

Because rubidium moves through the body very quickly, the test is usually faster than other imaging methods.

What it shows

Doctors use it to:

  • Detect blocked or narrowed coronary arteries
  • Measure how much blood reaches different parts of the heart
  • Evaluate coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Assess heart function after a heart attack

One big advantage: it can quantify blood flow, not just show images—meaning it can measure how well blood is actually moving through the heart.

Why rubidium PET is used

Compared to standard myocardial perfusion imaging:

  • More accurate, especially in people with obesity or complex cases
  • Shorter test time (often under an hour)
  • Lower radiation dose in many cases
  • Better at detecting small or multi-vessel blockages

Safety

  • Rubidium-82 has a very short half-life (about 75 seconds), so it leaves your body quickly

Side effects are rare; stress medications may cause temporary symptoms like flushing or chest tightness
