Event Monitor

A Holter monitor is a portable heart-monitoring device that continuously records your heart’s electrical activity (ECG or EKG) over 24–48 hours or longer while you go about your normal daily activities.

Event monitor

Purpose

Doctors use a Holter monitor to detect heart rhythm problems that might not show up during a standard ECG at the doctor’s office, such as:

  • Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Bradycardia or tachycardia (slow or fast heart rates)
  • Unexplained dizziness, fainting, or palpitations

How it works

Small electrodes are attached to your chest with sticky patches.

  • Electrodes connect to a small recording device you wear on a belt or shoulder strap.
  • The monitor continuously records your heart’s electrical signals.

You keep a diary of symptoms, activities, or unusual feelings to correlate with the recordings.

What doctors look for

  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • Heart rate trends over time
  • Relationship between symptoms (like palpitations) and heart activity

Advantages

  • Non-invasive, painless
  • Records long-term heart activity
  • Can capture intermittent symptoms missed by short ECGs
